Josh Primo, 19, Is Astonishingly Released By The San Antonio Spurs

When the San Antonio Spurs revealed on Friday night that they had waived Josh Primo, the basketball world was in disbelief. Primo, the class’s youngest player, was selected with the No. 12 overall pick in the NBA Draft in 2021.

“It is our hope that, in the long run, this decision will serve the best interest of both the organization and Joshua,” RC Buford, the CEO of Spurs, made a statement.

Coach Gregg Popovich of the Spurs declined to comment. Many NBA executives are puzzled as to why the 19-year-old was abruptly waived when he appeared to be an important part of San Antonio’s long-term strategy.

“I’m sure there is more to the story,” one BasketballNews was told by the NBA general manager. “They just selected his option as well.”

Primo’s third-year team option was just picked up by the Spurs two weeks ago, as the GM mentioned, making their decision to release him all the more puzzling.

Primo issued the following statement to ESPN: “I am aware that today’s announcement has surprised you all. I’ve been seeking assistance to cope with past trauma I’ve experienced, and I’ll use this time to devote more attention to my mental-health care. I’m hoping to be able to talk about these topics in the future so that I can support people who have experienced a similar kind of suffering. Right now, I value your privacy.”

Primo averaged 7.0 points, 4.5 assists, 3.3 rebounds, and 0.5 blocks per game this season while playing 23.3 minutes. He made 50 appearances (including 16 starts) and played 19.3 minutes per game, averaging 5.8 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists.

Primo is very talented; after all, there’s a reason he was selected for the lottery only a year ago. The Spurs’ decision to waive him may prevent some NBA teams from claiming him. Executives must do their research and attempt to learn more about this peculiar situation.
