World Cup 2022: Stephanie Frappart Will Officiate the First Female Match Between Germany and Costa Rica
Stephanie Frappart has already become the first woman to referee in the men’s Champions League, World Cup qualifying and Ligue 1, and will now break new records at the 2022 World Cup as part of an all-female refereeing team on Thursday
Stephanie Frappart, a referee from France, has been chosen to oversee the match between Germany and Costa Rica on Thursday. She will make history as the first woman to officiate a game at the men’s World Cup.
The 38-year-old will lead an all-female on-field team for the Group E match at Al Bayt Stadium, with Brazil’s Neuza Back and MexicanKaren Diaz Medina was selected as her helper.
When she served as the fourth official for Mexico vs. Poland’s scoreless draw on Tuesday, Frappart became the first female official for a men’s World Cup match.
Salima Mukansanga of Rwanda and Yoshimi Yamashita of Japan are two of the three female referees FIFA named on its list of 36 for the competition.
She has already entered the history books, according to the French official. She presided over the Netherlands’ 2-0 victory over Latvia in Amsterdam in March 2021 to make history as the first woman to officiate a men’s World Cup qualifier.
When Italian champions Juventus defeated Ukrainian club Dynamo Kyiv 3-0 in the group stage in Turin in December 2020, she became the first female official to oversee a men’s Champions League match.
She also officiated the Super Cup game between Liverpool and Chelsea in 2019 and the US vs. Netherlands women’s World Cup final in the same year.
Ahead of the start of the tournament, Frappart said she hoped the inclusion of female referees in Qatar would “make things happen” on a broader level. “It’s a strong sign from FIFA and the authorities to have women referees in that country,” she said.
